This isn't really "new" news. However, I was browsing through the WDFW website and saw this article about bagging some guys poaching salmon. I understand why this is newsworthy, but what I don't understand is why we don't hear about it more.
With salmon season in full swing, shouldn't we hear about all the guys getting caught poaching salmon every day? Cause you know it happens. Maybe it's because we don't have enough Fish and Game Wardens out there patroling the waterways and forests looking for the bad guys. Aren't we in a recession? Don't we need jobs for people? What's the unemployment rate at right now? According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics it was 9.3% for Washington in September of 2009. Hmmm.
This specific case is interesting though. They were conducting night operations inside a state hatchery fish collection site. An anonymous tip set the whole sting operation off and the WDFW bagged three guys illegally harvesting (wild) fish. Good on 'em.
What I would like to see is more WDFW patrols around the areas that get fished heavily during the multiple salmon seasons. It's no secret people don't obey the rules, even when other fisherman are watching. Some claim ignorance, others just don't care. It's good to hear about other fisherman doing their part though and calling in misbehaviour when they see it. That can only do so much.
