No reason to bring the kitchen sink. If you bring a bag onto the river with you, make sure it's comfortable and you're not carrying more than you need. After hiking miles of river, stumbling over slippery rocks and casting all day, you'll be glad you packed light.
Typically you'll need less than you think you do.
Lay it all out on the garage floor or some place similar and look at everything you plan on bringing. Ask yourself if you REALLY need it. Then ask yourself again.
Also, keep a master list. Write what you take down and when you get back cross off what you didn't use. Then pack only the new list next time. After a few trips of doing this you'll have a solid list of things you can rely on needing. Once you have that, keep it all in your fly fishing pack so it's ready to rock and roll.
