When you're walking to and from the fishing hole, carry your rod with the tip pointed behind you. This will lessen the chances you have of breaking the tip when you're walking through brush. Just make sure you don't hit your buddy who's following you. Also, to keep your tippet and fly from getting tangled in your line or on leaves and branches, strip out a few feet of fly line (from the tip), hook the fly around the second or third guide from the reel and then wrap the tippet around the reel in the same direction the fly line is on the reel. This will protect the tippet as well as keep everything from tangling.
